COLLEGE 101: TIPS FOR FRESHMAN COLLEGE

Summer is almost over and most of us are now going back to school. (Enjoy your vacation UP students!) Time flies so fast, I can't believe that I am now a senior student. I remember back when I was a freshman, even if I know my school for 4 years (I graduated at PUPLHS) I am still clueless on how college life works.

Going to a new school gives us mixed emotions. Everything is new! The environment, people, policies and so on. How did I manage to survive being a freshie? Continue reading to find out how! ;)

1. Familiarize yourself on your school.
When you take the entrance exam on your school and on the enrollment, have you feel like you are on a maze? You don't know where to go and you ask people for directions. Though you can ask from time to time it is better if you know some of the important places on your school like the gym, clinic, library, dean's office, registrar office and so on. If you know where you have to go, you are saving yourself from being late at your class.
Usually on the first day there are some students or organizations assisting freshman around. They even handle a school map with landmarks and instructions on how to get there. You can also search on your school's facebook page or twitter to look if they have a photo of a school map.

2. Do not expect that all your professors will show on the first day.

Seriously, in college not all your professors will attend your class on the first day and it is also the same thing after holidays or on the next semester.

But it doesn't mean guys that you should cut classes. Stay in your room until the class ends just to be sure that if a professor came in you are there. Some professors (terror professors) give a quiz on the FIRST day of class. Yes, you heard that right.

You won't be bored naman because there are some higher years and organizations that will go room to room to introduce to you the school, their experiences, about professors that you may face including the terror ones, and also give you tips on how to handle those hard subjects. Some class do some "introduce yourself" activity so you can know each other better.

3. Listen, Write and Review.
Three words that made me survive three years in college hopefully until graduation. In college, some professors admit that they are lazy to write notes on the blackboard. They prefer to speak in front of the class and some also don't even use or read the book they required to buy.

So I suggest that you listen and try to understand what your professor is talking about. If he pointed out something important, write it down or highlight the words on your books like the topics you should review.

Whatever you have understand on his time, write it down. Compare your notes with your classmates so you can see if you have missed something important. Writing down things that you need to study helps your brain to remember it better. Remember that you don't need to write every single word your professor say.

4. Be active.
No, it is not about exercising. I am talking about school activities. Join organizations that interests you. If you are a member of choir in your high school then join your school's choir or if you want to play volleyball or you love anime you can join cosplay.

This is the right time to explore and expand. You can't learn everything at class and while education is important, developing yourself is important too.Always remember to balance everything and as long as your other curricular activities doesn't affect your studies then go for it! :)

5. Dress appropriately.

Some universities don't require uniforms. That means you can wear any outfit you like. You can wear dresses, skirts, shorts, pants everything! However, some professors don't accept students that wear shorts or slippers on their class so just to be safe, wear something casual like pants and polo shirt on your first day. If all your professors don't mind what you wear, then wear whatever you like. As long as you are comfortable on what you are wearing then go for it.
Don't also forget that college require a lot of walking and sometimes even running to go to one room to another, passing some requirements and going to one building to another. I suggest that you leave your heels at home and wear something comfortable like flats or sneakers. When it comes to bag, I prefer backpacks, sling bags or satchel than shoulder bags. It depends on my class schedule and if I have to go somewhere else after school. If I have a P.E class, I use backpacks because I can put everything there like P.E uniform, water bottle, extra shirt, towels and so on.
Jansport and Hawk Bags make some durable bags. They are affordable and comes in lot of designs too!

6. Lastly, quality is better than quantity.
One of the most important lesson I have learned in college is that it is okay if I don't have a lot of friends, 1 or 2 true friends is what I need.

Believe me, it is hard to find true friends in college unlike in high school. You may even see yourself bonding with different groups every week before you find your own. I don't trust a lot of people in college it is just that I feel like everything is a competition and some would really try to be your friend at first and then destroy you afterwards. Yes, I have trust issues but I am telling you it is totally fine if you don't have a lot of friends as long as you have those who got your back and you are 100% comfortable to share your secrets and stories with them then it is fine. 1 true friend is better than 10 fake friends you know.

I also don't forget to have some bonding time with my high school bestfriend, Avier. If there is one friend that I trust the most, that is her.

It is great to bond with your high school friends from time to time and just share stories on how stressful your college life is. Even if you are on different university or course now, it is nice to bond with your good friend and explore college life together.

That's all for my tips for freshman collefe. How was your college life? Share it with me on the comment box below :)
